Biography of Christian Rosenmund

Christian Rosenmund is a pharmacist and physiologist. Since 2009, he has been Professor of Neurobiology at the Institute of Neurophysiology at the Charité in Berlin, which is part of the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence. Previously, he was a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston (TX, USA) since 2002 and a university lecturer in physiology at the University of Göttingen from 1999 to 2003. Christian Rosenmund is intensively studying the function of synapses of the nervous system. Their functional properties in the brain can vary drastically. Moreover, they can be subject to rapid and long-lasting changes. This in turn has an effect on information processing in the brain: how we learn and forget, how we think and feel, how we perceive our environment and act. In the laboratory, Christian Rosenmund investigates the fundamentals of synaptic transmission, focusing on the release of neurotransmitters. Here he is particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms. Elucidating the mechanisms of synaptic transmission and its regulation is crucial to Christian Rosenmund's research. It forms a basis for understanding how the brain functions or malfunctions. Christian Rosenmund's research also aims to identify the individual steps and movements of a vesicle cycle. Such vesicles are filled with transmitters that ensure the transmission of stimuli. With the help of the experiments and research conducted by Christian Rosenmund, it should become clear which presynaptic proteins, protein domains and individual residues control these steps.
